The Las Vegas Raiders officially locked up the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on Sunday, setting the stage for a franchise-defining offseason.
Entering Week 18, the New York Giants were the only other team still in contention for the top selection. However, their victory over the Dallas Cowboys removed them from the race, leaving the door open for Las Vegas. Although the Raiders defeated the Kansas City Chiefs later on Sunday to finish the season at 3–14, they still emerged with the No. 1 pick due to the NFL’s strength-of-schedule tiebreaker.
Among the four teams that finished 3–14 the Raiders, Jets, Cardinals, and Titans — Las Vegas held the lowest strength of schedule, giving them the edge. The Jets secured the second overall pick after falling to the Buffalo Bills, followed by the Cardinals at No. 3 and the Titans at No. 4. The Giants will select fifth, with the Browns, Commanders, Saints, Chiefs, and Bengals rounding out the top 10.
Holding the first pick gives the Raiders a valuable opportunity to reset the direction of the franchise, particularly at quarterback. Las Vegas has not selected a quarterback in the first round since choosing JaMarcus Russell, the top pick in the 2007 draft a decision that still looms large in team history.
Currently, the Raiders’ quarterback room includes a mix of short- and long-term options. Veteran Geno Smith is under contract through 2027 and carries at least $18.5 million in guaranteed money for the 2026 season. Aidan O’Connell, selected in the fourth round of the 2023 draft, also remains under contract and could factor into the team’s future. Meanwhile, Kenny Pickett is set to enter free agency this offseason, further adding uncertainty to the position.
While quarterback will dominate early draft discussions, it is far from the only concern on the roster. The Raiders have multiple glaring needs, with the offensive line standing out as a major area requiring improvement. Upgrading protection up front could be critical, whether the team opts to draft a quarterback or build around its current options.
The 2026 NFL Draft will take place April 23–25 in Pittsburgh. For the Raiders, holding the first overall pick represents more than just draft positioning; it's a chance to reshape the roster, redefine the offense, and potentially alter the trajectory of the franchise for years to come.
