The New York Yankees let another winnable game slip away Monday night, falling 3-2 to the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards after carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning. The loss marked New York’s fourth straight defeat and spoiled a dominant outing from starter Ryan Weathers.
For six innings, the Yankees looked in complete control. Weathers baffled Baltimore hitters with sharp command and swing-and-miss stuff, striking out nine while holding the Orioles hitless into the seventh inning. The left-hander allowed just one hit and one walk before exiting after Adley Rutschman opened the seventh with a single to break up the no-hit bid.
New York’s offense, however, failed to provide much breathing room. Ben Rice accounted for all of the Yankees’ scoring with a two-run homer in the third inning, his 13th home run of the season. Rice finished the night with two RBIs as the Yankees managed only five hits overall.
The game turned quickly in the bottom of the seventh after Brent Headrick replaced Weathers. Following a walk and a baserunner already aboard, Orioles rookie Coby Mayo crushed a three-run homer to left field, giving Baltimore its first lead of the night at 3-2. It was one of only three hits the Orioles collected all game, but it proved decisive.
Aaron Judge went hitless as the Yankees’ lineup continued its recent slump. New York stranded several scoring opportunities and once again struggled with runners in scoring position. The club has now dropped four consecutive games after being swept over the weekend by Milwaukee.
“It stinks,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after the game, according to multiple reports, as New York wasted one of its best pitching performances of the season. Weathers’ outing lowered his ERA and strengthened his case to remain in the rotation moving forward.
Rice provided one of the few bright spots for New York. The first baseman has emerged as a major contributor early this season and is now batting .312 with 13 homers. Aaron Judge still leads the Yankees with 16 home runs and 30 RBIs on the year.
The Yankees dropped to 26-16 with the loss, while Baltimore improved to 19-23. New York will try to snap its skid Tuesday night in Game 2 of the series
