The Arizona Diamondbacks opened their road series in Texas with a gritty 1-0 victory over the Texas Rangers on Monday night at Globe Life Field, riding another dominant pitching performance and timely early offense.
Arizona scored the game’s only run in the first inning when Geraldo Perdomo ripped an RBI double to bring home Corbin Carroll. That single swing proved enough as the Diamondbacks’ pitching staff completely shut down the Rangers’ lineup.
Starter Michael Soroka delivered one of his best outings of the season, tossing 6 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits, striking out five, and walking one. Soroka improved to 5-2 on the year and continued a strong stretch for Arizona’s rotation, which has now produced seven straight starts of at least six innings.
Arizona’s bullpen handled the rest. The relievers combined to finish the shutout before Paul Sewald recorded the final outs for his ninth save in nine opportunities this season.
Perdomo finished the night with the game-winning RBI, while Carroll scored the lone run after getting on base early. The Diamondbacks managed six hits overall but stranded several runners after loading the bases in the eighth inning.
Texas threatened in the opening inning after getting a runner to third with one out, but Soroka escaped the jam and never looked back. The Rangers finished with only four hits and were shut out for the second time this season.
“We’re throwing the ball really well right now,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said after the win, praising the consistency of the pitching staff during the club’s recent stretch of strong starts.
The victory moved Arizona back to .500 at 20-20 on the season and gave the Diamondbacks their third shutout win of the year.
