Just like earlier in the week, the Cougars rotated players in and out of reps, giving everyone a fair shot to prove themselves. With five new offensive linemen in the mix, much of today’s focus centered around building chemistry and communication up front.
Quarterback and passing game coordinator Shawn Bell spoke about the strides the team is making in execution, particularly at quarterback. “This is the most improved position on the field,” he said, crediting both Texas A&M transfer Conner Weigman—who has emerged as the likely QB1—and returning quarterback Zion Chriss.
The two have created strong chemistry in the room. “You know Zion throws a good ball, the first person saying good ball is Conner, and Conner throws a great ball and Zion’s doing the same,” Nesbitt added. Weigman continues to draw praise for his accuracy and leadership, although he was visibly frustrated with himself after a missed play during today’s practice.
Bell took note of that moment, saying, “He expects himself to be perfect… but he’s done a great job of turning the page. He wants to be the greatest and wants to be coached hard. You want to coach a kid like that”
With competition still tight across every position group, the staff remains undecided on who will line up with the first team. That decision may not be made until kickoff nears.
