Expectations were high for last year's team but ultimately it ended in a major disappointment. Coach Dabo Swinney is confident Clemson football has enough talent and funds to compete with the top teams nationally this year.
In the Tigers' first five games of 2026, that optimism will be tested. LSU, Georgia Southern, North Carolina, Cal, and Miami will be among Clemson's opponents to begin the season.
Swinney's Clemson team went 7-6 in 2025, its second-worst season in his 17 seasons. The Tigers started 1-3, losing to Georgia Tech, LSU, and Syracuse with their only win came against Troy University in a game they still struggled in. That eliminated Clemson's chances of making the College Football Playoff and ACC Championship.
The Tigers could face similar troubles in 2026 if they stumble in their first five games.
If the Tigers secure victories against key early opponents like LSU and Miami, it could set the tone for a successful season. This could propel them into playoff contention. However, any slip-ups could derail their championship hopes and pressure Swinney to adjust quickly. Ultimately, the team's performance in these initial matchups will be crucial in determining whether Clemson can reclaim its status as a national powerhouse.
Building early-season momentum is vital for maintaining confidence and morale within the team. Positive outcomes in the initial games not only boost players' spirits but also create a winning culture that can carry them through tougher challenges ahead. Conversely, early setbacks can lead to a loss of confidence and increased scrutiny, making it harder to recover as the season progresses.
