South Carolina has a few concerns in the upcoming season
South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley said South Carolina does not have a go-to post player for the first time in 10 years, so it's on everyone, including the guards, to figure out how to move forward with this new approach.
The post players have been a key part of the Gamecocks roster since 2014, from A'ja Wilson to Aliyah Boston to Kamilla Cardoso to name a few. Against Memphis, Sania Feagin, Joyce Edwards, and Chloe Kitts showed how the Gamecocks could handle the absence of a dominant big player.
Unfortunately, Forward Ashlyn Watkins has been suspended from all team activities after being arrested on charges of first-degree assault and battery and kidnapping on Aug. 31. She is scheduled to appear in court on Friday. Guard play will be even more pivotal in 2024-25 for the defending national champions and that's an area of strength for the Gamecocks. In addition to Raven Johnson's ability to play the passing lanes and Te-Hina Paopao's 3-point shooting, MiLaysia Fulwiley's passing and slashing ability will also be crucial this season as well.
Joyce Edwards, Tessa Johnson, and Bree Hall will all have key roles as well. This will be an interesting season for the Gamecocks but with their new identity, I feel like they will be locked in even more.
