Heading into the US Open tournament, a lot of people felt Naomi Osaka could be one of the players heading deep into the tournament. She kicked off her first round with Greet Minnen. For the first time in a few months, Osaka was in complete control. She finished off her opponent with a 58% win off her first serve and drove the ball down the length of the court. Osaka's had a few unforced errors, but she cleaned them up and ran away with the two sets, 6-3 and 6-4.
After Osaka's victory, she broke down things she could have done better. “Honestly, I could have had a better attitude, like I was just very stressed,” she said. “It was the first round, and this tournament means a lot to me, so I really wanted to win. But I just wish I thought more about the process rather than the result. But I’m glad I was able to win.”

Now, Coco Gauff has had one heck of a season this year and she kicked off her first round against Ajla Tomlijanovic in a thrilling match. Let's take it to the second set where Gauff had to dig herself out two games and came back roaring to send it into an extra set. I do not know if it was the heat or Gauff being tired, but her serves were not very crisp and Tomijanovi jumped all over it. She hit Gauff with some tough slicing forehands and took the set to extend the match to a winner take all. Gauff regained her composure in the third set, and hurled a bunch of volleys and deep backhands, which caught Tomijanovic off gaurd. Gauff ended up taking the set and advanced, 6-4, 6(2) -7(7), and 7-5. After the victory, Gauff had this to say about her performance.
“It wasn’t the best,” Gauff said, “but I'm happy to get through.”
