Coming into the Roland Garros Gauff was one of the favorites to win the tournament. On Saturday, she had a tough match up against Anastasia Patapova. In her first set, Gauff played pretty well and had Potapova on her heels with her first serve, winning at a 61% rate. After winning her first set 6-4, Gauff had to endure some adversity. She had a couple of games that got away from her, which helped Potapova build up her confidence. At one point in the second set, Gauff had to dig herself out of a 5-3 deficit to make the finishing set a thriller.
Gauff went on a 15-6 point run to head into the tie break game. The break game did not go so well for the comeback queen. Gauff struggled with her backhand shot, which gave Potapova confidence as she rolled to a 7(7)-6(1) to force a third set.
After losing the second set, Gauff played a bit more aggressive. She tried to find different ways to knock Potapova off her game, but unforced errors were some of the key factors in the third set. You could see Gauff trying to will herself back in the game after the third point, saying "C'mon. After that C'mon and the crowd erupting each time Gauff won a point, she found herself being up 3-1. However, we cannot discount Potapova, who climbed her way from a potential 4-1 match and won three games to even up the set at 3-3. Both players could not win consistent points, but eventually Potapova won the set 6-4.
