Junior defensive back Shelton Lewis has left the team and plans to take a redshirt year before entering the transfer portal when it opens. Since he has only played in four games this season, he can use 2025 as a redshirt year while maintaining two additional years of eligibility.

Lewis, who is 5-11 and 185 pounds, played 49 defensive snaps in the first four games for Clemson (1-3, 0-2 ACC), including a season-high 33 snaps against Syracuse. He was listed as the backup Tiger (nickelback) on this week's depth chart.

This marks the first midseason departure from Clemson with the intent to redshirt and transfer since 2022, when linebacker Sergio Allen and wide receiver Dacari Collins left the program. Lewis, who appeared in 27 games (six starts) during his Clemson career, will have two remaining years of eligibility at his next school starting in 2026.

Lewis's departure could impact Clemson's defensive depth, particularly in the secondary. As a backup Tiger, his absence may force the team to rely on less experienced players to fill his role. This could lead to potential challenges in maintaining defensive consistency, especially in situations requiring versatile coverage skills.
