No. 2 South Carolina ended No. 5 Vanderbilt's unbeaten start to the season with a 103-74 victory on Sunday. Ta'Niya Latson scored 21 points, while Tessa Johnson added 20.
Vanderbilt had won 20 straight games to begin the season, but South Carolina, with 19 straight victories over Vanderbilt, proved too much.
The Gamecocks (20-2, 6-1 Southeastern Conference) were determined after an overtime loss to No. 16 Oklahoma and took control early, going on an 11-2 run in the first two minutes and building a 21-point lead in the second quarter. Their defense was key, forcing 16 first-half turnovers from a Vanderbilt team averaging just 12.5 per game.
Vanderbilt made a brief comeback before halftime, with Mikayla Blakes' three-point play and Aubrey Galvan's buzzer-beating three cutting the lead to 11. However, South Carolina responded in the third quarter, using a 15-2 run to secure the win.
Blakes, the SEC's top scorer, led Vanderbilt with 23 points but also contributed five of her team's 20 turnovers. South Carolina had five players in double figures, including Madina Okot with 17 points and Joyce Edwards with 16, showcasing their depth against a Vanderbilt defense that typically holds opponents to 58 points.
