Serena Williams opens up opening night of the US Open with a victory

New York- In her retirement tour, Serena Williams gets a first- round victory over Danka Kovinic in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

After announcing to the public that she was going to retire after the US Open two weeks ago, all eyes were on Serena Williams during opening night. Prior to the match between Danka Kovinic and Williams, broadcasters and fans talked about Williams' and her legacy outside of tennis. As the match got underway, Willliams started off a bit slow and had a couple of unforced errors that put Kovinic up a couple of sets. After the fourth game, Williams settled in and won three consecutive games to take the first set, 6-3.

The second set was a on edge type of game. Each time it looked like Williams was gaining and putting the clamps on Kovinic, Kovinic would hit spinning backhand shots that had Williams back pedaling. The competitive switch from Williams clicked on and in the later games, Williams started winning her second serves and increased her winning percentage from 37% to 50%. She put the game on ice with a forehand shot that forced Kovinic to mistime the shot, which hit the net. Williams finished the set with a victory 6-3.
