The Philadelphia Eagles defense may be entering a new era in 2026, but defensive coordinator Vic Fangio made one thing clear Thursday — he has no plans to walk away from football anytime soon.
Speaking to reporters during OTAs, the veteran coach addressed speculation about retirement while also offering insight into several key offseason additions and positional battles shaping Philadelphia’s defense heading into the upcoming season.
Fangio admitted that thoughts about retirement naturally surface after every season, especially at this stage of his career, but emphasized that stepping away was never seriously considered.
“I still like doing it,” Fangio said. “I like the group of guys we have. I like working with them. I still like the challenge of the job.”
The longtime defensive architect even joked that recent medical evaluations showed he was “reverse aging,” telling players they were “stuck” with him for “a long while.”
The veteran coordinator sounded energized by the Eagles’ defensive makeover, particularly when discussing free-agent additions Jonathan Greenard and Riq Woolen.
Fangio praised Greenard’s consistent ability to pressure quarterbacks and defend the runoff the edge, calling him a productive and physical pass rusher who brings proven experience to the defense.
He appeared especially excited about Woolen, whose rare size-speed combination immediately stood out during evaluations.
“You don’t see many corners in the league that are 6’4” that can move and mirror receivers,” Fangio said. “His length is more of an asset than a detriment.”
Fangio revealed the Eagles briefly explored Woolen during the 2025 season when trade possibilities surfaced, but Philadelphia ultimately waited until free agency to make its move. After studying him more closely this offseason, Fangio said he was surprised the cornerback didn’t receive more long-term interest around the league.
The Eagles are also entering camp with major questions at safety following offseason departures. Fangio confirmed the position opposite Andrew Mukuba remains an open competition, with veterans and younger defensive backs all expected to receive opportunities.
