MiLaysia Fulwiley, a 5-foot-10 junior, spent two seasons with Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks before transferring to LSU in April. She explained her decision in an interview with Sports Illustrated digital show "Around the W," published on Sept. 1.
Fulwiley, who grew up just 15 minutes from the South Carolina campus, described the program as "great" but emphasized her need for a fresh start. "I felt like I needed a new environment and a fresh start. Everyone deserves that," she said.
During her time with the Gamecocks, Fulwiley often came off the bench and finished the 2024-25 season as the team's second-leading scorer with 11.7 points per game. The Gamecocks lost three starters this season, including two guards, Bree Hall and Te-Hina Paopao.
Fulwiley also noted the importance of taking advantage of the opportunity to transfer while in college. "While you're in college and have the opportunity to leave, I think it's the best time to do it," she said. "In the WNBA, you can't just say, 'I want to leave.' I wanted a different environment and to align my career goals with where I see myself. I felt this move was the best choice."
At LSU, Fulwiley hopes to thrive in a system that emphasizes fast-paced play and dynamic guard action, which aligns with her strengths on the court. The team has a strong track record of developing players and offers a supportive environment that encourages personal and athletic growth. Additionally, joining the Tigers presents an opportunity for Fulwiley to take on a leadership role and make a significant impact in the SEC.
