The Arizona Diamondbacks saved their best swing for last

Rookie Ryan Waldschmidt launched a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving Arizona a dramatic 4–3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chase Field. The win improved the Diamondbacks to 62–55 and opened an important divisional series in memorable fashion.

Arizona entered the ninth trailing 3–2 after watching an early advantage disappear. Jorge Barrosa reached base before Waldschmidt drove the decisive pitch over the center-field wall for his second major-league homer, instantly turning a potential loss into one of the team’s most exciting victories of the season.

The Diamondbacks had taken the lead in the second inning when veteran third baseman Nolan Arenado hit his 17th home run of the season. Geraldo Perdomo doubled the advantage in the fifth, lining an RBI triple to center that brought Tim Tawa home.

Starting pitcher Merrill Kelly kept the Dodgers hitless through five innings. Los Angeles finally broke through in the sixth, when Tommy Edman recorded the club’s first hit and later scored on a Freddie Freeman forceout. Kelly subsequently left the game with an apparent injury after striking out four.

The Dodgers tied the score in the seventh on Edman’s RBI single. Andy Pages then put Los Angeles ahead 3–2 with a solo home run in the eighth, appearing to complete the comeback.

Arizona had already produced several crucial defensive plays. Corbin Carroll robbed the Dodgers of a home run, while catcher Gabriel Moreno threw out Shohei Ohtani attempting to steal second. Those plays helped keep the game close enough for Waldschmidt’s late heroics.

Kevin Ginkel earned the victory after holding Los Angeles scoreless in the ninth. Dodgers' reliever Edwin Díaz took the loss.

The Diamondbacks finished with seven hits and played error-free defense. More importantly, they demonstrated the resilience needed for a team fighting to remain in the National League postseason race. Against a first-place Dodgers club, Arizona absorbed three consecutive scoring innings and still found a way to answer.

On Friday night, that answer came from a rookie with one unforgettable swing.
