D-Backs take the series against Cleveland, despite the L on Sunday

The Arizona Diamondbacks ended their visit to Cleveland on a disappointing note Sunday, falling to the Guardians in the finale of a three-game series at Progressive Field.

Arizona entered the afternoon with momentum after winning the first two games of the series, including a 12–8 victory Saturday. The Diamondbacks were unable to complete the sweep, however, as Cleveland responded with a win that dropped Arizona’s record to 59–53. The Guardians improved to 57–56.

Despite Sunday’s setback, the Diamondbacks still captured the series and completed their road trip with a winning 6–4 record. That is an encouraging result for a club trying to strengthen its position in a crowded National League Wild Card race.

Starting pitcher Merrill Kelly took the mound for Arizona opposite Cleveland’s Slade Cecconi. The finale did not unfold as smoothly as the Diamondbacks hoped, and the offense could not produce enough of the timely hitting that powered Saturday’s high-scoring victory.

The loss should not overshadow the progress Arizona made away from home. Winning six times on a 10-game trip kept the team above .500 and within reach of postseason contention as the schedule moves deeper into August
