49ers are optimistic that Deebo Samuel will impact the game

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Deebo Samuel is back in San Francisco, and the 49ers intend to make full use of his versatility.

With injuries thinning the team’s running back room during training camp, offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said Samuel has received work in the backfield as the 49ers evaluate their available options.

“It gives us a chance to get Deebo in there a little bit and get him some touches,” Kubiak said Sunday. “Anytime guys are out, it lets guys step up and gives them opportunities.”

Kubiak offered an encouraging assessment of the 30-year-old Samuel, who is reacclimating to San Francisco’s offense after spending a year away from the team.

“Deebo’s in great shape,” Kubiak said. “He looks really good to me in terms of where his body’s at. He can run all day. So, no issues there. Deebo still looks like Deebo to me.”

Samuel built his reputation as one of the NFL’s most distinctive offensive weapons by lining up both as a receiver and in the backfield. Kubiak indicated that the 49ers still see him as a multidimensional threat.

“When he has the ball in his hand, there’s nobody more explosive, more dynamic on the field,” Kubiak said. “Deebo’s got to be able to affect the game in a lot of ways. That’s our plan with him.”

Samuel is still catching up on some of the terminology and adjustments San Francisco made during his absence. Kubiak characterized those changes as relatively minor, including tweaks to the language used for motions, formations and protections.

“His foundational understanding is really good,” Kubiak said. “But there’s little things that you’re relearning and are maybe a little bit new this year.”
