Clemson running back Phil Mafah was named one of the preseason candidates for the 2024 Doak Walker Award

This comes as no surprise. Mafah recorded career highs in rushing attempts (179), rushing yards (965), rushing touchdowns (13), receptions (21) and receiving yards (108) in 506 snaps over 13 games (five starts). He played behind Will Shipley last year and should receive most carriers this season, so I expect those numbers to increase even more.

With Mafah taking on a more prominent role, Clemson's offense could become even more dynamic and difficult to defend. His ability to both run and catch effectively adds versatility, potentially leading to more scoring opportunities. Consequently, this could translate to more wins and a stronger bid for the ACC Championship.

He is on the list with Oklahoma State University's Ollie Gordon II (Doak Walker Award recipient in 2023). It is Gordon's goal to become the third award winner to receive the honor twice (Melvin Gordon in 2018-19 and Ricky Williams in 1996-97). The list also features 2023 Award finalist Omarion Hampton (North Carolina). It also features 2023 semifinalists Tajh Brooks (Texas Tech), Marcus Carroll (Missouri), R.J. Harvey (UCF), and Damien Martinez (Miami).
