ASU rolls over Morgan State in home opener

Arizona State could hardly have scripted a more emphatic beginning to its 2026 football season.

Quarterback Cutter Boley threw for 387 yards and six touchdowns Saturday night as the Sun Devils overwhelmed Morgan State 70-7 at Mountain America Stadium. The victory gave ASU a 1-0 record and tied the second-highest scoring performance in program history. Only the Sun Devils’ 79-point outing against Colorado State in 1969 produced more points.

ASU established control almost immediately. On the second play of its opening possession, running back Kyson Brown broke free for a 46-yard touchdown. An onside-kick recovery helped the Sun Devils strike again, with Boley connecting with Omarion Miller for a 10-yard score that made it 14-0 less than three minutes into the game.

Marquis Gillis added a 25-yard touchdown run before Morgan State briefly answered with its only score of the evening. ASU responded quickly, however, as Boley found Reed Harris for a 28-yard touchdown and a 28-7 first-quarter lead.

The Sun Devils continued pulling away in the second quarter. Grayson Rigdon turned a reception into a 54-yard touchdown, AJ Ia caught a 12-yard scoring pass and Harris added his second touchdown shortly before halftime. ASU entered the locker room leading 49-7.

Boley’s sixth touchdown came early in the third quarter when Rigdon scored on a 56-yard reception. David Avit and Jason Brown Jr. later added rushing touchdowns, pushing the margin to 63 points. With the outcome settled, both teams agreed to play a shortened, 10-minute fourth quarter.

Harris finished his ASU debut with six catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns. Miller contributed 102 receiving yards and a score, while both of Rigdon’s catches went for touchdowns of more than 50 yards. Brown led the rushing attack with 80 yards on only six carries.

Arizona State finished with 681 yards of total offense, averaging 9.6 yards per play. The Sun Devils gained 432 yards through the air and 249 on the ground, recorded 32 first downs and did not punt. They also converted all five of their red-zone opportunities.

The defense was equally convincing after surrendering Morgan State’s first-quarter touchdown. ASU held the Bears to 188 total yards, including just 86 passing yards, and prevented them from scoring over the final three quarters.
