Aja Wilson wins the MVP race in historical fashion
The Aces' A'ja Wilson became only the second player in WNBA history to receive all 67 first-place votes from members of the media for 670 points. The only other unanimous MVP was Houston guard Cynthia Cooper in the WNBA's inaugural season in 1997.
Wilson previously won the MVP award in 2020 and 2022. After Breanna Stewart and Alyssa Thomas, she finished third in last year's MVP race, one of the closest in league history. Wilson's fierce competitive nature fired her up early in the season, and she never looked back.
She set the league record for rebounds in a season with 451 and became the first WNBA player to reach 1,000 points in a season. As a third-time MVP, Wilson joins Sheryl Swoopes , Lisa Leslie , and Lauren Jackson in that elite company. They are all retired and in the Naismith Hall of Fame.
This season, Wilson led the WNBA in scoring (26.9), blocks (2.6), player efficiency rating (34.9) and win shares (10.9). It is the highest scoring average in WNBA history, surpassing Diana Taurasi's 25.3 points per game in 2006.
The Aces won two WNBA championships under Wilson, and last season she was the WNBA Finals MVP. In 2018, she was drafted No. 1 out of South Carolina and named Rookie of the Year. Earlier this month, Wilson won her second Olympic gold medal. Clearly you can see all she does is win win win no matter what congratulations A'JA.
