The future looked bright for Chennedy Carter for a moment.

After last playing in the WNBA in 2024, and playing in China last year, the Las Vegas Aces gave Carter a chance to prove that she is capable of contributing to winning a championship. This is exactly what she had done for the past two months. With a career-high 52 percent shooting from three points and an average of 12 points, Carter is among the top five scorers in the WNBA in points-per-36 minutes.
Carter was waived by the Aces just before the league's midseason cutdown deadline, after which all non-guaranteed contracts become guaranteed.
The decision to cut ties came just two days after she played 15 minutes off the bench in a double-digit loss to the Fever.
For much of June, Carter was out of the lineup due to injury. However, as she returned to the court, it seems like lingering injury-related concerns were not the reason she was waived. After all, it’s difficult to believe that Vegas would dump their leading bench scorer, even if injured, unless something happened behind closed doors.
The elephant in the room is Carter’s history as a teammate and competitor. Her skills have never been doubted. She faced challenges related to team dynamics and locker room chemistry during her previous WNBA stints. Conflicts between her and her teammates and coaches have previously been reported, causing tensions within the team. While she had undeniable talent and impressive performance on the court, these issues may have led the Aces to release her. She has outstanding talent that shouldn't be wasted and I hope she bounces back like a Juvenile song.
