Women’s History Month with WNBA 2K23 celebrated by Dallas Wing’s Diamond DeShields and Mavs Gaming

The energy in the room erupted as Dallas Wing’s Diamond DeShields walked in the room. Forty girls from the local Boys & Girls Club of America smiled and looked excited awaiting the panel discussion to start. Following Diamond DeShields was Dallas Wing’s Manager of Team Operations, Amanda Miller, entered greeting each girl. In recognition of Women’s History Month, Mavs Gaming and the WNBA’s Dallas Wings hosted an exclusive WNBA 2K23 experience for the girls from the Boys & Girls Club of America with an opportunity to participate in a panel addressing the importance of mentorship in women and productive ways to engage and support women in sports and Esports.

The topic of discussion was to give information to empower and advice to the girls. Diamond DeShields gave several gems to the girls. “If you decide that you’re gonna pursue something that you love and that you’re passionate about, it’s worth the ups and downs,” DeShields stated in response to a question about her passion and her drive. “I hope you find the resources that you need to explore your passions, and give it your all as you pursue it.” She was inspired by her biology teacher, which happened to be a former Olympian silver medalist, would always share with Diamond a broad life experience that had an everlasting effect for her pursuit to be the best version of herself and aspire to become an Olympian one day.

Manager of Team Operations, Amanda Miller, gave her story of her involvement in sports management and how she found her way starting as a student-manager to work her way up becoming involved with a professional team like the Dallas Wings. “When I get nervous and I doubt, I always refer back to my mentor which was my high school basketball coach that instilled in me to be strong and accomplish anything as long as I put my everything and mind to it. We are put in these positions for a reason. Always chase your dreams and never diminish your path.” Each topic was powerful and the girls were enamored with the stories shared.

Following the panel discussion, the girls lined up to get fix their plates and interact with Diamond and Amanda. After the meal was complete, Evo Entertainment allowed the girls to interact in a fully operated arcade with games, bowling, and much more. The chance for Diamond and Amanda to get to know the girls was important for the impact that mentorship has on the youth, and how vital it is to be an example and role model for the community. The WNBA2K23 annual event was a success and newly added Diamond DeShields is becoming a fan favorite already before the season has even started.
