The Rock and Roman Reigns shine at night 1 of Wrestlemania 40

Night 1 of Wrestlemania was a chilly affair but the superstars who performed night one did their best to heat up  the record breaking crowd at Lincoln Financial Field. There was plenty of action throughout the night, including a fantastic women's world championship match, Sami Zayn defying all odds and taking on the ultimate underdog role. New tag team champions were crowned on both brands. And The Rock completely stole the show with an over 40 minute match. Wrestlemania night 1 was solid and most certainly set the stage for what's to come on night 2.

Women's World Championship: Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Becky Lynch: The night kicked off with the women’s title match. Becky Lynch was fighting an uphill battle as the announcers revealed Lynch was dealing with strep throat and a fever. It was a wonderful back and forth match barring the circumstances of the frigidness and Lynch being sick. Lynch found moments of success but Ripley was unstoppable. Lynch spiked Ripley with a tornado DDT and tossed her overhead into a barricade with the Becksploder. It barely slowed the champ. A Riptide attempt countered into a Manhandle Slam was Lynch's first near fall. Lynch leaned on her experience. "The Man '' targeted Ripley's injured  left arm. However, the champ had it well scouted. A brutal ending saw Ripley land two consecutive Riptides, the first into the corner buckle, to put down Lynch for good.

Undisputed Tag Team Championship: Judgment Day (c) vs. #DIY vs. The New Day vs. Awesome Truth vs. A-Town Down Under vs. New Catch Republic (Six-Pack Ladder Match):

It was a tightly contested match with plenty of exciting spots. R-Truth had a comedy spot as he mistakenly confused the match for a traditional tag match. He got the hot tag from The Miz, took out Finn Balor with John Cena's move set and tried to pin his opponent. A-Town Down Under captured the SmackDown tag team titles to become new champions. Their celebration was short-lived as New Catch Republic powerbombed Waller from the ring through a ladder laid out ringside. R-Truth got some long overdue revenge on Priest. Truth grabbed the raw belts winning his first WrestleMania match which elated fans.

Rey Mysterio & Andrade vs. Santos Escobar & Dominik Mysterio:

The most talked about moment of the match was when Dominik Mysterio was intercepted by two enormous masked men which was later revealed to be Philadelphia Eagles players Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson. Mysterio hit a double-619 followed by a top rope splash on Escobar for the win. There wasn't much juice on this match leading in and it served as a nice cool down spot. The Kelce-Johnson cameo was a fun moment to get the crowd out of their seats.

Jey Uso vs. Jimmy Uso: The brother vs. brother rivalry was a major letdown. Eight months of twin brother tension got off on the right note as Jey barrelled into Jimmy with a suicide dive before the match even started. That pace was quickly replaced by a methodical one. Bitter older brother Jimmy hit Jey with a volley of super kicks and plenty of taunting in between. The twins exchanged stiff punches as the crowd alternated between chants of "Yeet!" and "No Yeet!" The trash talk was plenty. There was a spot in the match where Jimmy apologized to his brother. Jey fell for it before it quickly turned into instant offense for Jey. Jey wins but the match just fell flat outside of the superkicks.

Bianca Belair, Naomi & Jade Cargill vs. Damage CTRL (Asuka, Kairi Sane and Dakota Kai): It was a short straight to the point match that helped elevate Jade Cargill’s star power. The powerhouse took out each of her three opponents with ease. Damage CTRL completely fell apart from there. Asuka accidentally spat poison mist in Sane's face, Belair whipped Asuka with a gunshot-like pony tail and Cargill put Kai away with her Jaded finishing move. The match was a powerful statement seeing three african american women and two japanese women representing their culture in a positive way.

Intercontinental Championship: GUNTHER (c) vs. Sami Zayn: Zayn's fire burned bright at the start of the match. He ducked and dodged Gunther's offense. Everything was going to plan before Gunther snatched Zayn mid-air and planted him with a German suplex. From there Zayn fought an uphill battle.  Gunther exhibited lots of viciousness, punishing Zayn with powerbombs and top rope splashes. Instead of going for the win, however, Gunther repeatedly taunted Zayn's wife ringside. Zayn seemed to be motivated by Guenther’s heelish tactics. Zayn clocked Gunther with a Helluva Kick to the top rope, a spiked brainbuster into the buckle and two more Helluva Kicks to end Gunther's 666-day reign as intercontinental champion. In Philadelphia Zayn played the role of Rocky.  No one thought Zayn would win when the match was first announced. Their in-ring pedigree lived up to expectations. A fantastic build, and fantastic match.

Cody Rhodes & Seth Rollins vs. The Rock & Roman Reigns: This match lived up to the hype as The Rock turned back the clock and showed little to no ring rust. The match was fought at The Rock’s pace. The match lasted well over 50 minutes as the action even escalated into the crowd. The Rock played into his final boss persona when he told the referee if he performed any sort of count-out, he would be fired, allowing him to take the fight with Rollins out into the crowd. When the action returned to the ring. The Rock nearly hit Rhodes with a People's Elbow but Rhodes countered with a Cody Cutter and nearly Cross Rhodes only to get hit with a Superman punch from Reigns. Rollins then pulled Rhodes out of the way, leading Reigns to spear The Rock. Rhodes and Rollins hit stereo Pedigrees but both Rock and Reigns kicked out. Rhodes put Rock through an announce table with a Rock Bottom and Reigns drove Rollins through the ringside barricade with a spear, leaving all four men down. Rhodes hit Cross Rhodes on Reigns twice but as he went for a third, Rock whipped him from behind with a weight belt. Reigns then tagged The Rock in. The Rock hit The Rock Bottom and People's Elbow for the three count to end the match. Tomorrow’s match will be fought under Bloodline Rules as Rhodes attempts to finish his story.
