Spence Jr. defeats Ugas by TKO in 10th round

Errol Spence Jr. made a statement in his return to the boxing ring after having a 14-month absence due to a devastating car accident that required surgery. Fighting in front of his hometown gave him all the energy that he needed. Spence put on a clinic by noticeably taking advantage of his speed and setting up body shots to take advantage of Ugas’ right eye continuing to swell round by round. Spence eventually went on to swell the right eye of Ugas completely shut.

Referee Laurence Cole had no choice but to stop the fight at the 1:44 mark of the 10th round after advising Ugas’ ringside doctor about the right eye. Fans of boxing know how entertaining the welterweight division is. By Errol Spence Jr. unifying his WBC and IBF titles with the WBA belt from Ugas, who was 27-5 with 12 KO’s) coming into the fight, he has shown that he is a major powerhouse at the 147 pound division. Spence extends his record to an impressive 28-0, with 22 KO’s. The crowd was truly electrifying. Spence had the entire Dallas-Ft. Worth cheering him on. Not only the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, but friends and family throughout the state of Texas for the 32-year-old native of DeSoto.

There were a few moments in the boxing match that Yordenis Ugas showed resiliency. In round 6, Ugas did land a flurry of punches that did knock out Spence’s mouthpiece and did wobble Spence, however credit Spence for bouncing back after that moment. After the fight, Spence commented on his preparation leading to the fight. “I didn’t have any doubts at all. I believed in myself 100% and trained 100%. I didn’t want a tune-up fight or someone I knew I could beat. I wanted someone who would bring out the best in me and Ugas did that.” Spence landed 40% of his power punches and he landed 216 punches to Ugas 96. Ugas unfortunately, was limited to one punch at a time from a close range due to the swelling on the right eye. Spence’s victory unifies the title belts at the 147-pound welterweight division. Spence did not hesitate to let everyone know what was next for him. Spence proclaimed, “Everybody knows who I want next, I want Terence Crawford next. That’s the fight that I want. That’s the fight that everybody wants.” There will be much anticipation for this next fight

when it is officially signed and promoted. It will be one of the most anticipated in recent years in boxing.
