Derrick McFall, a redshirt freshman running back for SMU, has been named to the 2025 Doak Walker Award Watch List, as announced by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum on Tuesday. A four-star prospect, McFall made an immediate impact in 2024, rushing for 106 yards and two touchdowns in just five games. His standout performance included 69 yards and a touchdown in his debut against Houston Christian.

The Doak Walker Award, established in 1989, honors the nation's top collegiate running back, recognizing excellence on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. Named after SMU legend and 1948 Heisman Trophy winner Doak Walker, the award reflects the values of athletic and academic achievement.

The selection process involves the PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors naming ten semifinalists in November, followed by three finalists announced later that month. The recipient, determined by a second vote from the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be revealed live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on December 12, 2024. The committee includes former recipients, NFL All-Pro running backs, media representatives, and special guests.
