Serena Williams overcomes a rally by Mari Sakkari to move onto the quarter finals in the US Open.

New York- Serena Williams avoids the upset and moves onto the quarter finals in the US Open.

After losing last week to Maria Sakkari in her third set, Serena Williams was very motivated to be aggressive and kept Sakkari on the defensive end. With the sun beaming in her eyes Williams started to find her stride with hitting a couple of forehand shots that had Sakkari frustrated. Williams was playing her best tennis as she was winning 82% on her first serve and had a couple of Aces. Williams won the first set 6-3.

In the second set, Sakkari had two games that earned her breaks, as she hit a couple of backhand shots that gave Williams some trouble. Sakkari had a 2-1 lead early in the second set and kept the momentum up, as she had 37 service points, while Williams had 34 service points. Williams got herself back in the game after being down two games in the set. Sakkari and Williams had to play a tie break in which Sakkari won to extend the match 7,8-6,6.

Williams dug herself out of a 2-1 deficit in the third set and won three set games to put herself up one against Sakkari and never looked back as she survives and moves on to the quarter finals of the US Open, 6-3.
