Sabrina Ionescu Dominates WNBA All-Star 3-Point Contest, Sets Unprecedented Records in WNBA and NBA

The New York Liberty's star, Sabrina Ionescu left spectators in awe as she broke both WNBA and NBA records in the 3-point shooting contest in a timely fashion, during the start of the 2023 WNBA All-Star weekend.


The young sensation from the Liberty wasted no time in showcasing her unmatched shooting prowess hitting all but two of her shots in the final round, which earned her an outstanding 37 out of 40 possible points, surpassing the previous single-round records set by Stephen Curry and Tyrese Haliburton in the NBA, and Allie Quigley in the WNBA. Facing off against top-tier competitors, Ionescu left no doubt about her dominance in the contest. Sami Whitcomb of the Seattle Storm took second place with 22 points, followed by Arike Ogunbowale of the Dallas Wings with 11 points. With unwavering confidence and a steady hand, she flawlessly connected on all five shots from the right corner. The money-ball rack proved no obstacle for Ionescu, as she calmly swished each shot, earning her additional points. Notably, she also drained every shot from the longer-distance Starry balls on the wing, further cementing her victory and breaking the previous scoring record. Ionescu's incredible streak of 20 consecutive made shots, a record in both NBA and WNBA 3-Point Contest history wowed many including Warrior’s star, Stephen Curry known for his shooting abilities. He also chimed in, tweeting, "RIDICULOUS!" Expressing admiration for Ionescu's incredible display of long-range marksmanship, recognizing her as a rising force in the basketball world. For Ionescu, this victory signifies a redemption of sorts, as her New York Liberty team finished second earlier in the day. However, her record-breaking performance demonstrated her resilience and ability to thrive under pressure, earning her well-deserved recognition as one of the most promising talents in the WNBA. Reflecting on her record-breaking performance, Ionescu expressed her confidence in the shots she took and the adrenaline that fueled her success. She stated, “there's adrenaline. It was the final round. I had just lost in the skills challenge, and I wasn't going to lose again." The focus now shifts to her bright future.
