The 2026 NFL Draft has officially wrapped up, and the Las Vegas Raiders have taken significant steps to revitalize their roster, adding 10 rookies to the fold. The franchise's rebuilding process now hinges on their newly drafted quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, who enters the league as the No. 1 overall pick. A Heisman Trophy winner from Indiana, Mendoza’s arrival marks the beginning of a new era for the Raiders, and with the second-best odds to win Offensive Rookie of the Year, expectations are high.

Fernando Mendoza: The Face of the Future

There were no surprises at the top of the draft, as the Raiders made it clear for months that Mendoza was their guy. With a college career that made him a household name, Mendoza is now the centerpiece of the Raiders rebuild. The question looming over the team’s offseason is whether Mendoza will start right away in Week 1 or if the coaching staff will opt for a more cautious approach and let veteran Kirk Cousins take the reins to start the season. Regardless of who starts at quarterback, Mendoza will be under the microscope, with hopes that he will bring an immediate impact to a team in desperate need of a quarterback of the future.

John Spytek’s Strategic Moves in the Draft

Raiders’ General Manager, John Spytek, made some shrewd moves throughout the draft, including trading back in the second round for the second consecutive year. While the trade wasn’t as significant as last year’s, moving back just two spots allowed the Raiders to bolster their defense and build depth across multiple positions. In Round 2, pick 38, the Raiders selected Treydan Stukes, a dynamic defensive back from Arizona. Stukes brings athleticism and a ball-hawking mentality to a secondary that struggled last season. Following this pick, the Raiders addressed their defensive needs further with Keyron Crawford, an edge rusher from Auburn, who was taken in Round 3, pick 67. Crawford has high upside and could contribute to the pass rush immediately.

Adding Depth to the Offensive Line

In addition to improving the defense, Spytek made sure to reinforce the offensive line by selecting Trey Zuhn III (Round 3, pick 91), an offensive lineman from Texas A&M. Protecting Mendoza, the franchise's new quarterback, is essential, and Zuhn's presence will provide a solid foundation as the Raiders look to build a balanced attack.

A Trade-Fueled Fourth Round

The excitement didn’t end in the early rounds. Before Saturday’s draft action began, Spytek executed a trade to start off the fourth round, allowing the Raiders to grab Jermod McCoy, a cornerback from Tennessee. McCoy was considered a first-round talent by many draft analysts and securing him in the fourth round could be viewed as the steal of the draft for Las Vegas.

To further bolster their defensive backfield, the Raiders used another trade to send defensive end Tyree Wilson and a seventh-round pick to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for another fifth-round pick. This trade was used to grab Dalton Johnson, a safety from Arizona, adding yet another player to the team’s growing secondary. With four defensive backs taken in the first eight rounds, it’s clear the Raiders are focused on improving their pass defense in the coming season.

Rounding Out the Draft

As the draft continued, the Raiders made a few more selections to address other areas of need. Mike Washington Jr., a running back from Arkansas, was added in Round 4, pick 122, giving the Raiders depth behind starting running back Ashton Jeanty. Meanwhile, the team added Hezekiah Masses, a cornerback from Cal, in Round 5, pick 150, further strengthening their secondary.

To continue building a strong receiving corps, Malik Benson from Oregon was selected in Round 6, pick 195. Benson, a wide receiver with good speed and a knack for making big plays, could develop into a key piece of the Raiders’ offense. Finally, in the seventh round, the Raiders selected Brandon Cleveland, a defensive tackle from NC State, adding depth to their defensive line. With the team’s defensive line showing improvement over the last few seasons, Cleveland’s addition could solidify the trenches and help in stopping the run.

Looking Ahead

With these 10 new rookies, the Raiders have set the stage for the next chapter of their franchise. While Fernando Mendoza is undoubtedly the star of the show, Spytek’s strategic draft moves have added valuable pieces across the board. From improving the defensive backfield to fortifying the offensive line, the Raiders’ 2026 draft class has the potential to make an immediate impact.

As the team heads into the offseason and training camp, all eyes will be on Mendoza and how quickly he adapts to the NFL. If he lives up to the hype, the Raiders could be on their way back to postseason contention sooner than expected. The 2026 season may be the start of a new era of football in Las Vegas.
