Maryland’s big-ten tournament win keeps their season alive for at least another game!
The Big Ten is arguably the most competitive conference in all of men’s college basketball, and right in the middle of that conference is Maryland. The Terps entered the Big Ten Tournament in must-win territory after losing three straight games to mediocre Big Ten opponents. Worse of all was the last game, which was against Penn State, as they lost by 16. Maryland entered Wednesday’s game as the favorite, but they knew that their opponent was also desperately seeking a more than-needed win.
Rutgers and Maryland split their season matchups 1-1, but the Terps won their most recent battle back in February. Early on in the first half, Rutgers looked as if they were ready for the offseason, as they were quickly down 11 to zero. The rest of the entire game was similar, and Maryland kept their foot on the gas to save their season. Surprisingly, Rutgers failed to capitalize on the 18 turnovers UMD committed, as they only scored 9 points off those turnovers, while Maryland scored 6 points off Rutgers 11 turnovers.
The Scarlet Knights senior center Clifford Omoruyi averages 10 points per game, but he had a disappointing performance, scoring only 2 points in what might be his last collegiate game. On the opposite side, Maryland’s two seniors, Young and Scott, combined for 27 points and 14 rebounds to help save their season. On Thursday, the Terps will be seeking revenge against the Wisconsin Badgers, who edged out a tough win against them last month. The Badgers are in must-win territory as well, because a loss to the Terps can ruin their chances of being selected for the tournament. This game promises to be very competitive, with two physical teams trying to advance in a wildly competitive conference tournament. While the chances of Maryland winning the conference championship seem slim to none, all of their chips will be pushed to the middle of the table on Thursday to keep their hopes alive.
