FCS Montana State completes comeback to defeat New Mexico 35 -31
The Lobos of New Mexico looked to get the Bronco Mendenhall era off to an early win for the 2024 season in Week 0. What New Mexico did not expect was to face a talented Montana State Bobcats’ team that will be in contention for the FCS championship come December and January. Montana State found themselves down early 10 to 0 in the first quarter, and down by 10 points as halftime approached 24 to 14. It took a lights-out defense to outscore New Mexico 21 to 7 in the second half that led to a comeback for the Bobcats to win 35 to 31.
With Montana State trailing late in the fourth quarter, running back Adam Jones rushed for a 93-yard gain setting up Scottie Humphrey for the clinching touchdown that gave the Bobcats the victory. The Bobcats totaled 567 all-purpose yards with an impressive 362 of those being rushing yards. Montana State won the turnover battle by creating 2 turnovers compared to New Mexico’s 1. Quarterback Tommy Mellot came into the season with 2,474 career rushing yards and being the 7th all time rusher in Montana State University history.
Saturday afternoon, Mellot added to his total with rushing for 30 yards on 9 attempts and 1 rushing touchdown. His arm accuracy was on display throwing for 205 yards on 21 of 32 attempts for 2 touchdowns. Montana State will travel on the road to open their FCS season against Utah Tech. New Mexico now prepares for a challenge on the road against Arizona in Tucson for a Mountain West vs. Big 12 showdown on Saturday night.
