Excitement for the Washington Capitals, heading into this season

This upcoming season will possibly be the Washington Capitals best shot at the cup since their championship in 2018. Washington will have a motivated Alex Ovechkin as he looks to continue his quest to be one of the greatest players to ever touch the ice, barring injury. Ovechkin has a tremendous chance to break Wayne Gretzky’s scoring record, as he’s only 72 goals behind.

Joining Ovechkin on the top line will be Tom Wilson after he signed a 7-year, $45.5 million extension. Many fans criticized this extension because of Wilson’s lack of consistency, but his impact is greater than any statistical aspect, as he pretty much lives rent-free in the heads of the Capitals arch rival penguins! Nicklas Backstrom will finally be healthy to start the season, as he will lead the third line. Jon Carlson will have the guys on the backend prepared and ready to show that they’re the most underrated line on the team.

At the trade deadline last season, the Caps made a terrific pick in Rasmus Sandin, who should fit perfectly in the top four. Washington had quite a few new additions to their roster, but none are more important than the newly hired head coach, Spencer Carbery. The young 42-year-old coach might not have the experience of most coaches, but he comes with the type of experience you’ll want from a new head coach. He was successful at the AHL level and was an assistant for a winning franchise, the Toronto Maple Leafs. One of the first things Coach Carbery may look to do is fix all the issues with the Caps power plays, as they were in the bottom half of the league in power play percentage. The Capitals are mainly composed of older veterans, but with this splash of youth, they might have what it takes to make a run at the Stanley Cup!
