The Los Angeles Dodgers picked up a huge division win Tuesday night, defeating the San Diego Padres 5-4 in a dramatic showdown at Petco Park that featured late-game heroics and another big performance from Freddie Freeman.
The Dodgers fell behind early after the Padres jumped out to a 4-2 lead behind home runs from Manny Machado and Miguel Andújar. San Diego appeared to have momentum for most of the night, but Los Angeles slowly chipped away and delivered when it mattered most.
Freeman carried the Dodgers offense, blasting two home runs and driving in key runs to keep Los Angeles within striking distance. The veteran first baseman continued his strong season and gave the Dodgers life in a hostile road environment.
The decisive moment came in the ninth inning against Padres closer Mason Miller. Max Muncy worked a leadoff walk before a throwing error helped put the tying run in scoring position. Andy Pages then delivered the game-winning sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Alex Call with the go-ahead run and stunning the San Diego crowd.
Dodgers reliever Tanner Scott earned the win after tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings, while Will Klein recorded the first save of his major league career. Los Angeles improved to 30-19 on the season and moved back into first place in the National League West with the victory.
The win also marked the Dodgers’ sixth victory in their last seven games as they continue building momentum during a critical stretch against division opponents. Meanwhile, the Padres saw their four-game winning streak come to an end in heartbreaking fashion
