South Carolina wins its first exhibition game of the season

In the first exhibition game between the two teams this preseason, South Carolina crushed College of Charleston 91-60.

The team was led by Joyce Edwards, who had 28 points, 16 rebounds, and two assists. Tessa Johnson contributed 23 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Despite a slow start, Texas transfer Jordan Lee ended up with 15 points.

The game started slowly for South Carolina, especially on defense. As of the end of the first quarter, College of Charleston had a 20-19 lead, shooting 8-18 from the field. South Carolina’s interior defense was suspect early, and the Gamecocks gave up 24 offensive rebounds in the game.

The Gamecocks dressed only nine players. The following players warmed up but did not play: Chloe Kitts, Ashlyn Watkins, Kesli Andrews, Jerzy Robinson, and Kaeli Wynn. Alicia Tournebize did not warm up.

After Ayla McDowell ran into the shoulder of a College of Charleston player and appeared to cut her lip, the bench got even shorter. McDowell sat on the bench for the remainder of the game.

Credit One Stadium in Charleston hosted the game. Credit One Stadium is normally a tennis venue. Sunday’s LinkU Invitational was the first outdoor game in South Carolina’s program history.

It was Edwards who stood out for South Carolina with an impressive performance, showcasing her dominance on the court. She set the tone for the Gamecocks and played a crucial role in their win. Edwards' ability to control both ends of the floor highlights her as a key asset for the team this season.
