Raiders look to change their culture hiring Pete Carroll and John Spytek

It’s been a busy week for the Las Vegas Raiders, but a week that looms important for the team's immediate future. It started with the hiring of GM John Spytek The 44-year-old Spytek has deep connections to Raiders minority owner Tom Brady. Spytek was a freshman outside linebacker at Michigan when Brady was a senior. The duo also won a Super Bowl together with the Bucs in Brady's first season with Tampa Bay.
Spytek has a long NFL resume starting as a Detroit Lions operations intern in 2004. He spent five seasons in Philadelphia (2005-09) where he became a college and pro scout, three years in Cleveland as director of college scouting (2010-12), three seasons as a Denver scout (2013-15), (where he won another Super Bowl ring) and joined Tampa in 2016.
On Friday the Raiders followed up the Spytek move by hiring former super bowl winning coach Pete Carroll. Carroll is the third head coach to be hired by the Raiders since 2022. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports, the 73-year-old coach has agreed to a three-year deal with the Raiders that includes a fourth-year team option. Carroll spent 2024 as an advisor for the Seahawks. Carroll is ready to take on one of his toughest challenges in decades, turning around a Raiders team that has just two double-digit win seasons over the last 22 years, and only two playoff berths over that span.
The AFC West now has one of the most star-studded hall of fame laden group of coaches. The Raiders job comes with a lot of positives and a big glaring negative. The Raiders currently have the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Raiders have the second most cap room in the NFL. They also have pieces such as Brock Bowers, Jacoby Myers, Maxx Crosby, Christian Wilkins. The biggest need for the Raiders is securing a franchise quarterback, whether that’s by draft, trade, or free agency. Carroll takes over a team that ranked 29th in scoring last season and allowed the sixth-most points on defense. The Raiders are a long way from being competitive, but Carroll is undoubtedly up for the task.
