Eagles’ Offensive Coordinator, Brian Johnson connects to many levels of the offense

When asked about why Brian Johnson spends time attending offensive-line meetings, his immediate response came with a smile, “The difference when you’re a coordinator in college is that you coach a position. Having that ability to be able to kind of spread your time out. One of our main values is connecting. Coach Sirianni always preaches that, and it’s not just a sign that we have on the wall. I think we’ve got to be really intentional about it and just get a global view of what the offense needs.” The Eagles look to build on a Super Bowl berth from last year and the pieces that have landed on offense are like a puzzle that has come together to fit and display a bigger picture. The departure of the offensive and defensive coordinators in the offseason has not delayed the progress of the high-powered offense. Johnson acknowledged, “I just like going in that room and listening to Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach Jeff Stoutland teach. That room has a lot of experience and a lot of knowledge.”

The flow of the offense has details and intricacies that are being built with eager learning and understanding on both sides from players and coaches. Coach Johnson understands the strengths and stresses that need to be viewed in training camp and early in the preseason. Newly signed Marcus Mariota has shown a level of commitment to learning the complex offense and sponging the information and sharing the knowledge with the coaching staff his own unique experiences in the league.

The running back position is getting major attention in training camp. “I think we have a great group of running backs, and I think Jemal Singleton (Running Backs/Assistant Head Coach) has done a great job of getting guys ready to play,” Coach Johnson went on to say in addition to confirming, “Getting the reps that we need to get to see what everybody can do and evaluate skill sets and how we can deploy them, that entire group has done a really good job.” Brian Johnson’s approach will always be a working journey trying to find little wrinkles, little adjustments that will get the most out of what the offense has.

One of the points of emphasis will be trying to figure out ways to deploy types of match-ups, whether it be at tight end, receiver, or running back and having them be viable options to make plays when the ball goes their way. Coach Johnson continues to develop and grow in a great relationship with quarterback, Jalen Hurts. The two are in constant communication in terms of what is being seen in real time on the field. A level of consistency will be expected going forward, “Being here the last two years and understanding exactly how things are operated, understanding exactly how Coach Sirianni wants things done I think has been vital for me for sure.”
