Dream gets the W in thrilling victory over Mystics

The Dream narrowly defeated the Washington Mystics 92-91 on Friday night, with Allisha Gray scoring 18 points to lead all five Atlanta starters in double figures.


Brionna Jones contributed 14 points for Atlanta (9-4), while Rhyne Howard added 13 points and six assists. Jordin Canada chipped in 11 points, and Brittney Griner scored 10.

Sykes, who entered the game shooting 80% on 9.5 foul shots per game, the highest in the WNBA, went 10 of 11 from the free-throw line.


Shakira Austin shot 13 of 17 from the field, achieving a career-high 28 points and 10 rebounds for Washington (5-8). Sykes scored 21 points and dished out eight assists, while Sonia Citron added 17 points.


Citron and Austin each scored four points during a 10-0 run that narrowed the Mystics' deficit to 87-84 with two minutes remaining. Jones made 1 of 2 free throws before Sykes found Austin for a layup and completed a three-point play to bring the Mystics within one point. Gray then hit a shot in the lane, stole a pass near midcourt, was fouled, and sank two free throws to extend the lead to 92-87 with 47.4 seconds left. Emily Engstler scored in the lane with 31.7 seconds remaining. After Jones missed a layup, Brittney Sykes was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 0.1 seconds left but missed the second of three free throws, ending the game.
