Derby day was in full effect at Turf Paradise

Thousands of racing fans, fashion enthusiasts, and partygoers gathered at Turf Paradise on Saturday for one of Arizona’s most anticipated horse racing events of the year — the annual Kentucky Derby–themed celebration that doubles as the track’s biggest race day.

The event, often referred to as “Derby Day,” marked the culmination of the 2025–2026 racing season at the historic Phoenix racetrack, which runs one of the longest meets in the country, spanning from November through early May.  

A Day of Racing and Celebration

Gates opened early in the morning, with live horse racing kicking off before noon and continuing throughout the day. The excitement built toward the simulcast of the Kentucky Derby, giving Arizona fans a chance to experience the nation’s most famous race alongside local competition.  

The event blended sport and spectacle. Attendees dressed in traditional Derby fashion — bold hats, colorful outfits, and tailored suits — while enjoying live music, themed drinks like mint juleps, and multiple viewing areas across the venue.  

Organizers reported strong attendance, with large crowds filling the grandstands, VIP lounges, and outdoor party spaces. The Derby DayClub experience, a major highlight of the event, drew more than a thousand guests for a high-energy celebration that combined horse racing with nightlife-style entertainment.  

More Than Just Horse Racing

Beyond the races, the event offered a festival-like atmosphere. Activities included contests for best-dressed attendees, family-friendly entertainment areas, and live performances, making it accessible to both longtime racing fans and newcomers.  For many in attendance, the event represented a unique Arizona tradition — the state’s premier Kentucky Derby watch party paired with live Thoroughbred racing on home turf.  

A Historic Venue at a Turning Point

Opened in 1956, Turf Paradise has long been a cornerstone of Arizona’s sports scene and remains the state’s primary horse racing venue.  

However, the track is also entering a period of transition. Recent reports indicate potential long-term plans to relocate the facility under new ownership, raising questions about the future of horse racing in the Phoenix area.
