Amanda Nunes shows the world why she is still a fighter to be feared

Amanda Nunes has the title of the greatest female combat fighter that has ever lived and at UFC 277 she showed why that statement was true after shaking off the worst loss of her career against Julianna Pena. Nunes demonstrated the levels between the two fighters. Nunes relied a lot on speed and accuracy on the feet. Nunes scored three knockdowns in Round 2 as Pena continued to charge in wildly while Nunes planted counter right hands on her chin. The three knockdowns set a record for most in a women's fight in UFC history.

Nunes had her way in striking that throughout the next few rounds she decided to take things to the ground. The former champion Pena showed heart and guts not quitting after being badly cut with vicious elbows. Pena nearly scored another upset in Round 4. The moment came when she pressed her foot against the fence and attempted an armbar submission. The submission attempt was deep and Nunes fought hard to get free. It was a close call. Pena was an animal off her back but that just shows how great Nunes is being able to win despite Pena’s best shot.

Nunes also made history by joining Deiveson Figueiredo in being a former champ to win back his title in an immediate rematch. Nunes improved to 22-5 overall and adds Julianna Pena to a resume of Valentina Shevchenko (twice), Ronda Rousey, Holly Holm, Miesha Tate, Germaine de Randamie and Cris Cyborg. Pena dropped to 11-5 as a professional overall.

Speaking of Deiveson Figueiredo he will be running it back with rival Brandon Moreno (20-6-2 MMA, 8-3-2 UFC) for a fourth time to name an undisputed UFC Flyweight champion. After Moreno landed a devastating left body kick to challenger Kai Kara-France’s (24-10 MMA, 7-3 UFC) midsection. Kara-France folded like a lawn chair and clutched his midsection. Moreno raced in and landed an onslaught of punches to the head, Kara-France was unable to defend himself and referee Herb Dean stepped in. Moreno aligned himself to fight the recovering champion, Deiveson Figueiredo (21-2-1 MMA, 10-2-1 UFC), in the future. It will be the fourth head-to-head meeting of their career. The series is even at 1-1-1.

Before the fight the two fighters had serious beef. Moreno accused Figueredo of faking an injury to keep from fighting which caused a back and forth of name calling. After the bout, Figueiredo joined Moreno inside the cage. Despite the mean-mugging from Figueiredo, Moreno said he wanted to be an example for his wife and children. So he apologized to Figueirdo for offending him in the past and extended a hand. Figueiredo accepted the apology and the two put arms around each other hyping their next fight.

Now that UFC 277 is behind us some of the biggest takeaways are what is next for Amanda Nunes? She wiped away her biggest challenger in Julianna Pena and Nunes is a double champion she hasn’t defended her 145 pound belt and to many critics the 145 pound women’s division doesn’t have as much competition. Pena’s next fight could be her fellow country person Ketlen Vieara back at 135. As far as the undercard it’s time for the first four fight matchup in history. Moreno said he’d be ready in December to close out the year.
