Ryan Garcia makes a statement in second round stoppage

Ryan Garcia promised that Conor Benn would not make it past the fifth round. He needed less than two.

Garcia delivered a spectacular performance Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena, stopping Benn at 1:25 of the second round to retain his WBC welterweight championship. Referee Thomas Taylor waved off the fight after Garcia unleashed a sustained attack along the ropes, leaving Benn unable to defend himself.

The victory improved Garcia's record to 26-0 with 21 knockouts and marked his fastest stoppage in six years. His previous quicker finish came in February 2020, when he knocked out Francisco Fonseca in the opening round.

Garcia entered the bout with plenty of confidence, predicting that Benn would not survive five rounds. He backed up those words almost immediately. Benn attempted to apply pressure from the opening bell, but Garcia repeatedly found his target with his trademark left hook. The punches visibly shook Benn several times before Garcia produced the decisive sequence early in the second round.

Less than 20 seconds into the round, Garcia dropped Benn with a right hand. Benn managed to beat the count, but he never completely recovered. Garcia soon trapped him against the ropes and unleashed a barrage of punches, prompting Taylor to step in and end the contest.

The knockout was particularly significant because Garcia has now scored right-hand knockdowns in consecutive fights. He also dropped Mario Barrios with his right hand in the first round of their February meeting.

"I've always had a right hand. I've just always had injuries," Garcia said after the fight. "This is kind of the first two fights I had no injuries in my right hand. I'm happy, and I'm blessed."

With the victory secured, Garcia immediately turned his attention toward the rest of the welterweight division. He called out WBA champion Teofimo Lopez and WBO champion Devin Haney, both of whom were in attendance.

"Teofimo, get that ass up here," Garcia said. "We've got to clear this [division] out. I'll beat Devin Haney's ass again."

The comments add another layer to Garcia's already complicated history with Haney. Garcia defeated Haney in their April 2024 junior welterweight title fight, scoring multiple knockdowns, but the result was later changed to a no-contest after Garcia tested positive for ostarine. Garcia denied knowingly taking a banned substance. Since moving up to welterweight, Garcia has gone 2-1, and Saturday's performance was easily his most emphatic statement in the division.

For Benn, the loss represented the first knockout defeat of his professional career. He entered the fight with a 25-1 record and had built a reputation as one of Britain's most aggressive and powerful welterweights. His only previous defeat came by decision against Chris Eubank Jr. in the first bout of their highly publicized rivalry last year.

The fight also marked Benn's first appearance under the Zuffa Boxing banner. Garcia remains under promotional contract with Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, while Saturday's event was funded and promoted by Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority, and Dana White's Zuffa Boxing.

That promotional relationship could become increasingly important as Garcia's career develops. Dana White said after the fight that Garcia has one remaining bout on his contract with De La Hoya."Garcia looked incredible," White said. "He did everything he said he was gonna do. We'll see how this plays out. [Garcia] has one more fight with Oscar De La Hoya."

White also revealed that the event drew a sellout crowd and generated an estimated gate of approximately $8 million. For Garcia, however, the biggest takeaway was what happened inside the ring. He entered the night promising an early knockout and delivered one of the most dominant performances of his career.

Now, with the WBC welterweight title still around his waist, Garcia appears determined to pursue the biggest fights available. Lopez and Haney are already on his radar, and Saturday's two-round demolition of Benn gave him considerable momentum heading into the next stage of his career.

If Garcia can maintain the form he displayed at T-Mobile Arena, the welterweight division could soon revolve around him.
