On Thursday, head coach Sean McVay started his press conference with media after practice ‘with an announcement about the team's captions for the upcoming season.
“We voted on captains yesterday and you know we've got a bunch of quality leaders I think you know top to bottom this is a really great reflection of you know just leaders in general and seven guys got recognized” he said. He continued, “three on offense, Matthew Stafford Kyren Williams and Rob Havenstein - on defense Quentin Lake, Kobe Turner and Nate Landman and then on special teams Ethan Evans.”
Some NFL teams designate captains for the entire season, while others select them on a weekly or game-by-game basis. Captains are chosen either by player-wide vote within the team or by the head coach. In the Rams case, captains were selected for the 2025 season, and McVay stated that the team picked their leaders. He said,” Those seven guys will do an excellent job, but we've got a lot of other great leaders as well, and I think that was reflected in their teammates' votes, but you know happy for those guys and it’s well-earned and well deserved.”
Let’s take a closer look at each of the Rams' 2025 captains selected:
OFFENSE:
Matthew Stafford-:
Stafford is a 16-year veteran NFL quarterback who was selected first overall by the Detroit Lions in the 2009 NFL Draft and played with them for 12 seasons. He was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 2021 and led them to a Super Bowl victory in his first season with the team. During the 2024 season, Stafford had 3,762 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions in 16 games, with a QBR of 61.5 and a passer rating of 93.7.
Kyren Williams:
Williams is the first team running back for the Rams. He was drafted in 2022 after an outstanding college career at Notre Dame. He was named the Rams' primary back during the 2023 season, finishing with over 1,100 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. Williams was selected for the Pro Bowl and earned Second-Team All-Pro honors that year as well.
Rob Havenstein: Havenstein is the first team right tackle for the Rams. He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in 2015 out of the University of Wisconsin and is the last remaining player from that era of the franchise.
DEFENSE:
Quentin Lake:
Lake is a first team defensive back for the Rams. He serves as the defensive signal caller, wearing the green dot, which demonstrates his versatility by playing safety, slot, and box roles. The Rams drafted Lake in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft after playing for the UCLA Bruins. He is the son of former NFL player and coach Carnell Lake.
Kobe Turner:
Turner is the first-team defensive tackle for the Rams. He was drafted in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft after standout seasons at both the University of Richmond and Wake Forest University. During his rookie season, he tied a franchise record of nine sacks and came in third place for the Defensive Rookie of the Year votes.
Nate Landman:
Landman is the first-team linebacker for the Rams. After a successful career at Colorado University, receiving first-team All-Pac-12 honors twice, he went undrafted in 2022 but signed with the Atlanta Falcons' practice squad. He signed a one-year deal with the Rams in March of 2028, and he’s known for his physical and high-energy playing style.
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Ethan Evans:
Evans is a punter who was drafted by the Rams in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He was the first Division II player chosen in that draft after a successful career at Wingate University, where he was given first-team All-American honors.
