Patrick Mahomes is looking to prove that he is still the quarterback that the league fears

Patrick Mahomes has been cleared to participate fully when the Kansas City Chiefs open training camp at Missouri Western State University, marking a significant step in the quarterback’s recovery from a knee injury.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced Friday that Mahomes will begin camp with his usual workload, although the team will closely monitor his progress.

“He’s got clearance to practice and do all the different periods that we have in this camp,” Reid said. “He’ll have plenty of eyes on him, from coaches to trainers to doctors, but right now he’s been cleared to go ahead and participate fully.”

Mahomes received final clearance after meeting with Dr. Dan Cooper earlier in the week. The quarterback said being ready for the start of camp had been his goal throughout a demanding rehabilitation process.

“It’s a lot of hard work and just day-to-day, continuing to do it over and over again,” Mahomes said. “Now it’s just going to be about building and continuing to get better and better so that whenever the regular season comes, I can try to be available and be ready to play.”

Reid praised the time and effort Mahomes devoted to his recovery, saying few players could have handled the rehabilitation process more diligently. Mahomes will initially take his normal practice repetitions as the Chiefs gradually increase the intensity of camp.

Whether he will participate during the preseason remains undecided. Reid also stopped short of guaranteeing that Mahomes will be ready for the regular-season opener.

“I’m optimistic, and I know he is extremely optimistic,” Reid said. “But I think you’ve got to see how things go here. Let’s not make any predictions. Take it day-by-day and see where it goes.”

Mahomes acknowledged that medical clearance is only one checkpoint in his return. He must now regain confidence while moving within a crowded pocket and reacting to defenders at game speed.

“It’s not like it’s over and I’m just going to be able to play a game tomorrow,” Mahomes said. “You have to continue to work and prove to the coaches, doctors and everybody that I’m the same quarterback I was before, if not better.”
