Gardner Minshew out this week, nursing thumb injury

Jacksonville, FL- Coming off a bye week, the Jaguars face the reality that their star quarterback will not be in the lineup this week.

Gardner Minshew injured his thumb last week playing against the Los Angeles Chargers. It was reported by the medical staff that Minshew had a sore thumb. After x-rays came back last Tuesday, it was confirmed that Minshew's thumb was injured. Minshew did not tell his coach until last minute and Doug Marrone was not a happy camper when he found out the news.

“I talked to Gardner Minshew II about that. I found out from the trainers and doctors about that first I guess on Tuesday night. If you’re injured, you need to report it.’ I said,’ Two, it’s not like I don’t understand the competitiveness in you where you want to continue to play," said Marrone.

"You have to make smart decisions and decisions that’s what’s best for team’ and that was it. I don’t think I’m going to get involved, at least from my standpoint, of any disciplinary measure of just trying to learn and make sure the players understand that if you are injured, it could hurt the team, it could hurt yourself. Even though we appreciate the competitiveness that you all have that it’s in your best interest to make sure you report it and this way we don’t put someone out there that’s not really 100 percent.”

Jake Luton will get the start against the Houstan Texans this week.

With the Jaguars desperately needing a win, this could be a turning point for the organization if one of their back-up quarterbacks could string together some victories. If so, Minshew may lose his starting position.
