Canelo Alvarez and Jermall Charlo locked in for megafight

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez(59-2-2, 39 KOs) to many is the undisputed king of boxing. He has the resume and all the boxing accolades to prove it. Today Alvarez announced the next chapter in his boxing career, signing a three-fight deal with Al Haymon PBC, starting by defending his WBA,WBO,IBF and WBO super-middleweight world titles vs Jermall Charlo, likely scheduled for Sept 16. The other two fights are expected to take place on Cinco De Mayo weekend and Mexican Independence Day weekend in 2024, sources said.

This is a huge fight for boxing lovers as you get two guys who are some of the biggest names in boxing in the peak of their careers. Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) has held the WBC middleweight title since 2019 and he is a former IBF light middleweight champion. He has not fought since June 2021 when he defeated Juan Macias Montiel by unanimous decision to retain his belt. This will be his first fight at 168 pounds in his 13-year career.

It's a risky fight for Charlo WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said last month that Charlo's inactivity was due to mental health. Charlo is a former 154-pound titleholder who has never competed above 160 pounds. So taking Canelo is a huge hike in competition after a two year layoff. Canelo is coming off a successful title defense in May against John Ryder and was just in negotiations with cruiserweight champion Badou Jack for a fight in Saudi Arabia, but the weight was an issue. Jack tweeted that he was willing to come down to 190 pounds for the 200-pound title fight, but that Alvarez didn't want to fight above 180 pounds. In the case for this fight Charlo seems willing to move up in weight for his biggest fight and payday.

"Charlo has been looking for this fight for a long, long time," Sulaiman told Yahoo Sports. "First it was Triple G [Gennadiy] Golovkin and then it was Canelo. I think he's really hungry for this fight."

This fight adds to what has already been a sensational year in boxing thus far with all the big fights that fans want to see being made. Alvarez teaming with PBC is another step for more potential fights being made such as the winner of David Benavidez and David Morrell fighting the winner of Alvarez and Charlo. Boxing fans better be prepared to strap in as more exciting bouts are on the horizon.
