Naomi Osaka expands her reach in a different type of climate

Naomi Osaka is excelling in the barbie game. Osaka, who has won four Grand Slam singles titles in her career, has had a second Barbie doll designed in her business.

The first version that came out in 2019 was introduced to celebrate Mattel doll's 60th anniversary. The latest Osaka doll is a part of the Role Model Series and features the tennis players likeness. The doll is dressed as Osaka during the 2020 Australian Open.

“It’s such an honor to be a part of the Barbie Role Model series to remind young girls that they can make a difference in the world,” she said in a statement. “I want young girls everywhere to feel empowered to dream big and to know that if they believe in themselves that anything is possible!”

The Barbie is dressed in a flared white skirt, colorful tank top, and white visor while carrying a tiny tennis racket. The back of the box is a biography of Osaka that mentions her activism. There is also a photograph and a quote by her that says, “Don’t compare yourself to anyone because the path that you’re on is yours and yours only.”

We are incredibly honored to spotlight Naomi Osaka as part of our Barbie Role Model series,” Lisa McKnight, senior vice president and global head of Barbie dolls for Mattel, said in a statement.

The series also honors female Paralympic athletes and women who have made a mark in fashion, journalism, modeling, space exploration and other professions. The Barbie Doll is already sold out just hours after it's launch.
